Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital health are reshaping healthcare worldwide, and Africa is no exception. Governments across the continent are developing policies to support telemedicine, electronic health records, AI-assisted diagnosis, disease surveillance, and digital public health while protecting patient privacy and ensuring equitable access.
The challenge is not whether Africa should adopt AI in healthcare—it is how to implement it safely, ethically, and in ways that address the continent’s unique healthcare needs.

Ghana’s Progress
Ghana has taken important steps through its Policy and Strategy on Digital Health (2023–2027), which provides a national framework for strengthening digital health systems, improving interoperability, expanding electronic health services, and supporting better use of health information across the country.
As AI technologies mature, such national digital health strategies provide a strong foundation for responsible AI integration into clinical care and public health.
Opportunities for AI in African Healthcare
With appropriate governance, AI could help Africa:

- Improve radiology reporting.
- Support laboratory diagnosis.
- Reduce administrative workload.
- Strengthen maternal and child health.
- Improve disease surveillance.
- Enhance outbreak prediction.
- Optimise medicine supply chains.

The Future of AI and Digital Health in Africa
Africa has an opportunity to leapfrog traditional healthcare models by building digital-first health systems. Mobile technology, expanding internet access, and a young technology workforce provide strong foundations for innovation.
The goal is not simply to digitise existing healthcare processes but to design systems that are secure, interoperable, patient-centred, and tailored to African realities. Success will depend on policies that balance innovation with patient safety, ethical governance, and equitable access.
